Gearing up to apply for the DSA-JC and EAE-Polytechnic exercise this year? Writing your applications may seem daunting at times. We’ve been there before and we’re here to help make the process less stressful. Here are some key skills and attributes that may boost your application and make you stand out as a strong candidate.
Leadership and communication skills
Schools seek students who can take initiative, inspire others and work collaboratively towards common goals. These skills suggest maturity and the potential to contribute positively to the school environment – the ability to articulate their leadership style, positive impact on those around them and their experience in resolving conflicts within a team is important. This can be demonstrated through evidence of leadership roles in school clubs, sports teams or community projects, or participation in activities that require effective communication and collaboration.
Relevant experience / strong portfolio
The student’s portfolio should showcase their achievements, passion and suitability for the area or course of study they are applying for, as it provides a holistic view beyond their academic achievements. A well-crafted portfolio demonstrates tangible evidence of their skills and accomplishments (e.g., awards, projects, performances, leadership roles). Furthermore, their personal statement should also articulate their motivations, aspirations, and how the institution’s programmes align with their goals/beliefs.
Problem-solving and critical thinking
The ability to approach novel situations with a structured and analytical mindset is highly valued, as schools seek to develop critical thinkers who can analyze information, evaluate arguments, and form independent judgments. Students with problem-solving skills are also highly sought after as they involve logical reasoning and devising solutions in various situations, solve real-world problems and contribute to innovation in their respective industries. This could be demonstrated through participation in debate/philosophy clubs, or creating personal projects that identify and solve problems within their school or community.
Passion and commitment
In the DSA-EAE exercise, schools prioritise students with a genuine interest and demonstrated aptitude for the specific course/area of talent they are applying for as it suggests a higher likelihood of engagement and success in their programmes of choice. Students should clearly articulate their passions and provide evidence of their existing skills or potential in that area, demonstrating initiative in acquiring these skills through participation in relevant projects. Furthermore, students should also showcase significant achievements and a deep commitment to their chosen talent area to highlight their passion, discipline, and a high level of skill. This may include representing the school or nation in a sport or having their artwork exhibited at events.
In conclusion, while a strong academic record is beneficial, the DSA-JC and EAE-Polytechnic exercises offer pathways for students with diverse talents and interests. By highlighting and showcasing these crucial skills, students can significantly strengthen their applications and increase their chances of admission to their desired post-secondary institutions.Students should actively participate in activities that develop these skills and to thoughtfully present their experiences in their portfolios and personal statements.
